The Nun II: Sinister Shadows
“The Nun II” comes to theaters like a serious parade, with its dark and scary presence promising to give you the chills. However, as the scary stuff starts happening, it’s tough not to feel like you’ve seen it all before. This follow-up to 2018’s “The Nun” takes us back into Valak’s creepy world, but instead of getting better, it feels like going back to a familiar haunted house – spooky, but not very surprising. Directed by Michael Chaves this time and with Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, and Bonnie Aarons returning, this movie keeps the spooky supernatural horror style of The Conjuring Universe.
But here’s the big question: Is it better than the first one, or is it just more of the same scary stuff? Let’s take a closer look at “The Nun II.”
What’s the Story:
“The Nun II” picks up four years after the last movie, with Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) once again dealing with Valak’s spooky actions at a French boarding school. The story seems like it could be interesting, promising to tell us more about Valak and the secrets of the cursed abbey. But any hope for a really immersive and scary story goes away quickly as we see the same old scary movie tricks.
As one of the first big scary movies of the season, “The Nun II” goes back to The Conjuring world to give us more about the demon nun Valak. The movie is both a follow-up to 2018’s “The Nun” and a story that happens before the original Conjuring.
Who’s in the Movie:
“The Nun II” was written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and Akela Cooper, and it was directed by Michael Chavez. It stars these actors:
- Taissa Farmiga as Irene
- Jonas Bloquet as Maurice
- Storm Reid as Debra
- Anna Popplewell as Kate
- Bonnie Aarons as The Demon Nun
The Movie’s Rating and How Long It Is:
“The Nun II” is rated R because it has scary stuff and violence. The movie is about 1 hour and 50 minutes long, including the credits.
What Happens After the Movie:
Just like other big movie series, “The Nun II” has something extra after the main story. Luckily, you don’t have to stay through all the credits. After the main credits roll, there’s a short scene. If you’re a fan of this movie series, you’ll probably like it. I won’t say more to avoid giving anything away, but you might want to hold off on that bathroom break for a few more minutes!
Being Part of The Conjuring World:
If you don’t know what “The Nun II” is all about, it’s part of a big horror series that started with “The Conjuring” in 2013. In this series, there are three main Conjuring movies that follow the ghost-hunting adventures of Lorraine and Ed Warren. There are also spin-off movies about Annabelle, the scary doll from “The Conjuring.” Alongside those, there are now two “Nun” movies. But whether that’s all there is depends on who you ask.
In 2019, “The Curse of La Llorona” got mixed up with this series even though it’s actually a separate scary movie. This mix-up happened at the SXSW festival. The movie was produced by James Wan, who’s a big part of this scary movie series. But the director, Michael Chaves, later explained that it wasn’t supposed to be part of the Conjuring world.
Meet the Actors:
In “The Nun II,” Taissa Farmiga comes back, and she’s the real-life sister of Vera Farmiga, who’s also in this scary movie series. So, it’s a family thing! Alongside Taissa, there are some actors you might know and some new faces. Jonas Bloquet is back as Frenchie, who takes care of the haunted convent from the first movie. Storm Reid, who you might have seen in “Euphoria” and “The Last of Us,” plays another nun with Taissa Farmiga’s character. And, of course, Bonnie Aarons is back as Valak, the scary demon at the center of this series and the nun from the title.
