Lamborghini’s Next Supercar: 900hp Hybrid V8 Revolution

The next-generation Lamborghini Huracan features a revolutionary twin-turbo V8 hybrid engine, delivering unmatched power and performance.

The next-generation Lamborghini Huracan will boast a twin-turbo V8 engine paired with an electric motor, producing over 900hp. This new engine, codenamed 634, will be the most powerful and highest-revving V8 ever installed in a production car, featuring a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Huracan Successor: A Powerhouse with Over 900hp

The upcoming Huracan successor will feature a V8 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain that delivers more than 900hp. The combustion engine alone will produce 800hp and 730Nm of torque, surpassing the performance of the Huracan’s naturally aspirated V10 engine, even in its extreme STO variant. The most striking feature is its 10,000rpm redline, typically reserved for racing engines.

Only a few hypercars, such as the Mercedes-AMG One, GMA T.50, and Aston Martin Valkyrie, have engines with such high revs. Unlike the Audi-developed 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 used in the Lamborghini Urus and other models, the 634’s powertrain is entirely new and developed in Sant’Agata, Italy.

A key focus during the design process was defining the sound of the new engine. It will work alongside a lightweight, axial-flux electric motor integrated ahead of the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, contributing up to 150hp and 300Nm of torque to the rear axle.

Distinct Electric Drivetrain and Dynamic Performance

While Lamborghini hasn’t specified the total combined power output, it is expected to exceed 900hp. The 634’s drivetrain differs significantly from the Revuelto, which features two electric motors on the front axle and one in the gearbox. The 634 will likely house its traction battery in the transmission tunnel for optimal weight distribution and compact packaging.

The PHEV system will significantly enhance the dynamic behaviour of the Huracan’s successor. According to Lamborghini’s chief marketing and sales officer Federico Foschini, the package offers advantages unattainable with a conventional internal combustion engine, such as active torque vectoring, maximizing the engine’s potential.

Design and Underpinnings of the Huracan Successor

The new supercar will draw visual inspiration from the flagship Revuelto, featuring a dramatic silhouette, hexagonal exhaust, Y-shaped LED lights, and prominent air channels to boost downforce. The ‘monofuselage’ carbon-fibre monocoque from the Revuelto will influence its design, although the 634 will use more affordable materials like aluminium to maintain rigidity without the high costs associated with composites.

Unlike the 4,947mm-long Revuelto, the platform for the 634 will be shortened to distinguish it visually from its predecessor. The Huracan Tecnica, for example, measures 4,567mm in length.

Lamborghini will build the Huracan successor on the same production line as the Revuelto, marking the first time the brand has produced both supercars in series on the same line, thanks to shared architectural and electrical components.
