Range Rover and Range Rover Sport Now Manufactured in India

In a groundbreaking move that promises to redefine luxury SUV ownership in India, Jaguar Land Rover has begun assembling its flagship Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models locally. This strategic shift brings these iconic vehicles closer to Indian customers while significantly reducing their prices. Here’s everything you need to know about this exciting development.

Significant Price Reductions and Local Assembly Operations

Jaguar Land Rover has made a bold decision to assemble its premier Range Rover and Range Rover Sport SUVs in India. This move significantly decreases their prices. The Range Rover 3.0-litre diesel HSE LWB now starts at Rs 2.36 crore, reducing the price by Rs 44 lakh. The Range Rover Sport 3.0-litre diesel Dynamic SE is now priced at Rs 1.40 crore, down by Rs 29 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom, India. The high-performance Range Rover Sport’s 4.4-litre V8 SV edition will remain an imported model.

Expanding Local Production in India

India has become the first country outside the UK to locally assemble these two luxury SUVs. This move complements the existing production of the Velar, Evoque, Jaguar F-Pace, and Discovery Sport at JLR’s Pune facility. By assembling these vehicles locally, JLR reduces costs and shortens waiting periods, making these luxury SUVs more accessible to Indian buyers. Despite this shift, JLR continues to import the Defender, their best-selling model in FY2024 with 1,314 units sold. JLR began local assembly in 2011 with a contract manufacturing agreement with Tata Motors, starting with the Freelander.

The Locally Assembled Range Rover: Details and Specifications

The Range Rover has always been a favorite among Bollywood celebrities, sports stars, and affluent individuals in India, with sales reaching 394 units in FY2024. Most of these were the higher-spec Long Wheelbase (LWB) variants. While JLR has not released a comprehensive price list yet, the company announced that the 3.0-litre diesel HSE LWB is priced at Rs 2.36 crore, and the 3.0-litre petrol Autobiography LWB at Rs 2.60 crore, reflecting reductions of Rs 44 lakh and Rs 56 lakh, respectively. These prices are notably more competitive compared to the recently launched Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600, priced at Rs 3.35 crore. The Short Wheelbase (SWB) versions and the 4.4-litre V8-engined variants will remain imports.

The locally assembled Range Rover features two engine options: a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine producing 392hp and 550Nm of torque, and a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine generating 345hp and 700Nm of torque. JLR starts delivering the locally assembled Range Rover today, offering immediate access to this luxury SUV.

Locally Assembled Range Rover Sport: Enhanced Accessibility

In FY2024, the Range Rover Sport sold 404 units, with imported versions priced between Rs 1.69 crore and 2.80 crore. The new locally assembled Range Rover Sport starts at Rs 1.40 crore for both the petrol and diesel 3.0-litre Dynamic SE variants, reducing the price by Rs 29 lakh for each. JLR plans to release a detailed price list for the locally assembled model soon. These models will feature the same 392hp, 3.0-litre petrol and 345hp, 3.0-litre diesel engines. The high-performance 4.4-litre V8 SV Edition will continue as an import. JLR will begin delivering the locally assembled Range Rover Sport on August 16, 2024.

Range Rover House: An Exclusive Experience

To further enhance the luxury experience, JLR has announced the opening of ‘Range Rover House’ in Alibaug, Maharashtra. This exclusive facility offers a modern luxury experience to the brand’s discerning clientele. It showcases some of the first locally produced Range Rover and Range Rover Sport SUVs, allowing potential buyers to experience the latest models firsthand.
