“Avinya is not going to be a single model; it’s a brand,” emphasized Vivek Srivatsa, chief commercial officer at Tata Motors, in a recent interview with Autocar India. This declaration marks a significant shift in Tata’s approach to electric vehicles, signaling the birth of a comprehensive lineup rather than a solitary offering.

After previewing Avinya as a concept in April 2022, Tata plans to develop it into a premium all-electric brand that includes a range of cars and SUVs. Tata will build these vehicles on its advanced Gen 3 EV architecture, characterized by a born-electric skateboard platform. The debut model will hit the market by late 2025, ushering in a new era for Tata’s electric mobility offerings.

Premium Positioning and Diverse Offerings

The Avinya range will occupy the higher end of Tata’s product portfolio. “There will be some overlap with regular Tata EVs, but there is no hard ceiling for Tata Motors now, and no strict price differentiation,” Srivatsa explained. This flexibility allows Avinya to cater to a broader audience, offering various sizes and body styles, predominantly focusing on SUVs and MPVs.

Independent Brand or Sub-Brand?

A lingering question remains: will Tata and Avinya operate as independent brands, similar to Toyota and Lexus, or will Avinya be a sub-brand within Tata Motors, akin to Maybach within Mercedes? While this remains unclear, what is certain is that Avinya will embody Tata’s vision of premium, innovative electric mobility.

State-of-the-Art Manufacturing

Tata plans to produce the entire Avinya range at its upcoming new plant in Tamil Nadu, with an investment commitment of Rs 9,000 crore. The plant, likely to be established at Ranipet, may also be used for producing Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) EVs, signaling a synergistic approach within Tata’s automotive ventures.

Leveraging JLR’s EMA Architecture

Tata will base all Avinya vehicles on JLR’s modular EMA architecture, as announced last November. Tata Motors will pay a royalty fee to JLR for using the platform, but its localization will help keep costs competitive. The EMA platform, first announced in 2021, will also support the next-generation Velar, Evoque, and Discovery Sport. Localizing this platform in India not only benefits Tata but also enables JLR to tap into significant cost advantages.
